Characterization of friction stir consolidated recycled billet by uniaxial compression tests with miniaturized cylindrical specimen

2023

Abstract. Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-state recycling method that directly converts machining scraps into semifinished billets. This process has been proven to be a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly technique compared to remelting based conventional recycling methods. During FSC, machining chips are transformed into a solid billet by the stirring action and friction heat of the rotating tool. Due to process mechanics, especially temperature gradient and strain rate, billets have shown different hardness values and grain size distribution across their sections. Therefore, in this research, miniaturized upsetting samples are extracted from the FSC billet. The…

Beta forging of Ti-6Al-4V: Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties

2013

Titanium alloys are finding an increasing use in the aeronautical field, due to their characteristics of high mechanical properties, lightness and corrosion resistance. Moreover these alloys are compatible with the carbon fibre reinforced plastics that are also finding a wide use in the aeronautical field. On the other hand the use of these alloys implies some drawbacks, for example titanium alloys are often considered more difficult to form and generally have less predictable forming characteristics than other metallic alloys such as steel and aluminum. In this paper was studied both the microstructure evolution and the mechanical properties of a Ti-6Al-4V rolled bar after hot forging. The…

Behaviour in compression of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse steel reinforcement

2004

Abstract The compressive behavior of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse reinforcement consisting of steel stirrups or spirals was analyzed. Pumice stone and expanded clay aggregates were utilized to decrease the weight of the composite; hooked steel fibers were also added. The investigation was carried out by testing cylindrical and prismatic specimens of different sizes in compression using an open-loop displacement control machine, recording the full load–deformation curves. The influence of the dimensions and shape on the bearing capacity and on the ductility of the specimens confined with transverse steel reinforcements was analyzed. The results show the poss…
